Dubai to Abu Dhabi Transfer: Route and Timing Guide
The Dubai–Abu Dhabi corridor is one of the most frequently traveled inter-city transfer routes in the Gulf. Approximately 130 km separates the two cities, and while the highways are wide and well-maintained, rush-hour traffic on the Abu Dhabi–Dubai highway is a significant timing variable that every traveler on this route needs to account for.
Route Options: E11 and E22
Two main highways connect Dubai and Abu Dhabi. The E11 (Sheikh Zayed Road / Abu Dhabi–Dubai Road) is the coastal route passing through Jebel Ali, Ruwais approach zones, and the northern Abu Dhabi suburbs before entering the city. The E22 is the inland route, shorter in distance but running through less populated areas. Both converge into the Abu Dhabi approach roads.
The E11 is the primary route for most transfers due to its central access points — departures from Dubai Marina, JLT, and Downtown Dubai all feed naturally onto the E11. The E22 can offer a faster option when E11 is heavily congested, but it is not always the practical choice depending on the Dubai pickup location.
Key Route Segments and Drive Times
Approximately 130 km. Plan for 80–100 minutes off-peak via E11. During morning rush heading toward Abu Dhabi (07:00–09:00) or evening rush heading back to Dubai (17:00–19:30), add 20–40 minutes.
Approximately 120 km. Plan for 75–95 minutes off-peak. The Dubai Marina / JLT area has direct E11 access without city-center routing delays, making this one of the more efficient departure points.
Approximately 125 km via E11 and Yas Island access bridges. Plan for 80–100 minutes. Yas Island is home to major conference and entertainment venues — a frequent corporate transfer destination.
Approximately 135 km. Plan for 90–110 minutes. Saadiyat is Abu Dhabi's cultural and luxury hotel district. The final approach via the Saadiyat bridge is well-maintained and rarely the bottleneck.
Approximately 130 km. Plan for 85–105 minutes. ADNEC is one of the region's largest conference venues — transfers here are common for international event delegates arriving at DXB.
Approximately 130 km via E11. Plan for 80–100 minutes. The reverse route follows the same highway with the same peak-hour patterns — the morning rush from Abu Dhabi toward Dubai and the evening rush returning are both significant.
Rush Hour on the Abu Dhabi–Dubai Highway
The E11 between Abu Dhabi and Dubai is one of the UAE's busiest intercity highways. The morning rush sees heavy traffic heading from Abu Dhabi toward Dubai (resident workers commuting to Dubai). The evening rush reverses the flow — heavy traffic from Dubai toward Abu Dhabi. Both peak windows are consistent on weekdays.
The peak congestion window on the Abu Dhabi–Dubai highway runs roughly 07:00–09:30 (Abu Dhabi to Dubai direction) and 17:30–20:00 (Dubai to Abu Dhabi direction). For transfers in either direction during these windows, add 30–40 minutes to the base off-peak estimate. Friday mornings and post-weekend Sundays can also see elevated volume.
What to Confirm When Booking a Dubai–Abu Dhabi Transfer
Dubai is a large city. The pickup location — DXB airport, Dubai Marina, Downtown, JLT, or another district — affects both the travel time and the route used to access the E11.
Abu Dhabi city center, Yas Island, Saadiyat, ADNEC, and Al Reem Island all have different access roads from the E11 approach. Specify the building or hotel name and address.
When confirming your pickup time, check whether the journey aligns with the peak direction on the E11. A transfer scheduled during the peak window in the heavy-flow direction requires a larger time buffer.
The Dubai–Abu Dhabi route is heavily used by corporate travelers. For a 90–120 minute journey, selecting the appropriate vehicle category — not just the cheapest available — improves the working or resting quality of a long inter-city transfer.
Airport Connections on This Route
For passengers arriving at Dubai International (DXB) or Abu Dhabi International (AUH) who need to transfer to the other city, the inter-city transfer is a direct vehicle option. DXB arrivals heading to Abu Dhabi destinations skip transit requirements entirely. AUH arrivals heading to Dubai follow the same route in reverse. For these connections, providing the flight and terminal details for the inbound flight allows the system to time the inter-city departure based on actual landing and terminal exit, not estimated times.
