Why Start in Amsterdam

Schiphol (AMS) sits about 20 km southwest of central Amsterdam — roughly 25 minutes to Centraal Station and 34 to the canal-ring hotels by private transfer, from €87. Book the blockbusters ahead — the Anne Frank House sells out weeks early and the Van Gogh Museum runs on timed entry — and balance them with the city's quieter pleasures: the hidden courtyard of the Begijnhof, the brown cafés pouring jenever under beamed ceilings, a canal boat at dusk when the bridges light up. Food has range here, from herring carts and Indonesian rijsttafel to the Albert Cuyp market's stroopwafels made hot on the griddle. And rent the bicycle only if you mean it — the locals ride fast, and watching from a terrace is its own sport.

Around Amsterdam and the Randstad

The Randstad's other towns are all close. Haarlem and Utrecht offer the canal-and-café charm of Amsterdam at a gentler pace; the bulb fields and the Keukenhof gardens blaze with tulips each spring; and the North Sea beaches at Zandvoort and Bloemendaal fill with Amsterdammers on the first warm weekend. In a country this small, the question is rarely whether a day trip fits — it is which two.

Families and budget-watchers do well just outside the core, where hotel rooms grow by half for the same money: Amsterdam Zuid keeps a fast tram to the center, and Almere or Zaandam work when the trip mixes city days with the windmill country. Cruise passengers starting at the IJ port often sleep near Centraal the night before — the transfer from Schiphol runs about 28 minutes, timed to boarding.

When to Go

April–May is tulip season, when the bulb fields and Keukenhof gardens bloom, and the city is at its prettiest — King's Day in late April is the year's biggest party and its busiest travel weekend, so book transfers ahead. June–September brings long, mild days ideal for the canals and the coast. Winter is cold and low-lit but atmospheric: museum queues shrink, the brown cafés glow, and if the canals freeze — rare now — the whole country laces up skates.

Getting There and Around

Direct flights connect Amsterdam Airport (AMS), Schiphol, to the entire world. It sits southwest of the city with fast motorway and rail links across the Randstad. The train is quick but spits you out into the crowds of Centraal Station; with bags, a cruise to catch at the port, or a hotel out in Rotterdam or Almere, a pre-booked transfer is simpler — the driver meets you inside the terminal with a name board, tracks your flight, and waits up to 60 minutes free after landing.

In town, trams and boats do the moving and the center walks end to end in an hour. For a windmills-and-cheese loop, a Keukenhof morning in season, or a Randstad business day with several stops, the hourly service keeps a driver on call at a price fixed in advance.
