Just 5 km south lies Knossos, the largest Bronze-Age Minoan palace and the legendary labyrinth of King Minos; its throne room and restored frescoes are the island's single must-see. Back in town, the tavernas around 25 Avgoustou street are a fine place to try Cretan cooking — dakos, snails, slow-cooked lamb and raki — before you move on to the coast.

Beyond the coast, the interior rewards a day's exploring. The Lasithi plateau is ringed by old stone windmills and hides the Dikteon Cave, mythical birthplace of Zeus; in the south, the Minoan palace of Phaistos and the Roman ruins of Gortyna sit near the cave-pocked beach of Matala; and the wine villages around Archanes pour some of Crete's best reds. None has a fixed transfer route, but all are within a day of a Heraklion base.

Crete rewards eating like it grows things — because it does. Tavernas serve dakos under tomatoes from the yard, snails when the rain brings them, lamb from the hills and raki with everything; the mountain villages above the resort strip do the honest versions at half the price. When to Go

May–June and September–October are ideal — warm sea, open tavernas and good weather for the archaeological sites. July and August are hot and the resorts are full. Spring brings wildflowers and is best for walking; even winter is mild on the coast, though the Psiloritis and Lasithi mountains can carry snow.
