Why Start in Paris

Paris is served by two airports: Charles de Gaulle (CDG) to the northeast — the larger international hub, about 31 km and 50 minutes from the center — and Orly (ORY) to the south, about 20 km and 31 minutes from central Paris. Paris is the gateway to France, and which airport you land at shapes the arrival: CDG sits closest to Montmartre, Disneyland and the north, Orly to the Left Bank, Versailles and the south. Then eat: a flaky croissant and an espresso at a zinc bar, oysters and steak-frites in a bistro, or a picnic of cheese and wine on the banks of the Seine as the bateaux drift past. Museums reward planning — the Louvre and Orsay both sell timed entries that skip the worst of the lines, and most national museums open free on the first Sunday of winter months. Come evening, choose your Paris: a Seine cruise sliding under the illuminated bridges, jazz in a Saint-Germain cellar, or simply the hour when the Eiffel Tower sparkles and every café terrace turns to watch.

Airport to City: Times and Prices

Paris divides naturally by the Seine, and the right base depends on the trip. First-timers get the most from the 1st–4th arrondissements — the Louvre, the Marais and the islands — where the landmarks are walkable and the metro radiates everywhere. The Latin Quarter and Saint-Germain suit a slower, café-and-bookshop Paris; Montmartre trades a longer ride to the center for village lanes and the best sunset view in the city.

Families bound for the parks often skip the city entirely and base at Marne-la-Vallée — Disneyland and the resort hotels of Magny-le-Hongre are about 40 minutes from either airport, and a fixed-price transfer with child seats requested at booking makes the landing painless. Business trips lean west: La Défense towers over the axis from the Arc de Triomphe, under half an hour from Orly.

When to Go

Spring (April–June) and September–October are classic Paris — mild, in bloom or turning golden, and a little quieter. July and August are warm and busy, though many Parisians leave and some restaurants close; the trade-off is long evenings and the beach decks of Paris Plages along the Seine. Winter is cool and grey but romantic, with the museums uncrowded and the city lights at their best. Fashion weeks, the French Open and major trade fairs spike hotel prices and airport traffic — around those dates, book the transfer when you book the room.

Getting There and Around

From CDG or Orly, the train into town means changes and stairs with your bags.
