Why Start in Athens

Athens Airport (ATH) sits east of the city on the Attiki Odos motorway — about 31 minutes to the Acropolis quarter and 35 to the center by private transfer, from €43, with Piraeus and its island ferries at about 35 minutes. Athens is the gateway to Greece — its largest airport and the hub from which the islands, the Peloponnese and central Greece all radiate. For years travelers treated it as a one-day stopover on the way to the islands; that has changed. The historic center has been pedestrianized around its ancient sites, the food and bar scene has caught fire, and a string of beaches along the Athens Riviera gives the city a summer life of its own. Give it at least two days, and use the easy half-day trips into Attica for the coast and the great temples beyond.

In Athens: What to See and Eat

Start in Athens beneath the Acropolis, whose Parthenon has crowned the city since the 5th century BC. Below it spread the marble lanes of Plaka and the tiny, island-like quarter of Anafiotika, built by craftsmen from the Cyclades. The city center — Syntagma, lively Monastiraki and the Ancient Agora where Socrates once argued — is compact and walkable, and the superb Acropolis Museum makes sense of everything you have seen above. Allow a slow morning for the hill and a full afternoon for the rest.

Eat as the city does: souvlaki and gyros from a no-frills psistaria, small plates and ouzo in the backstreets of Psyrri, and fresh fish by the sea. In the evening, climb Lycabettus or Filopappou hill for the city's finest view, as the floodlit Acropolis floats above a sea of rooftops. Athens rewards wandering as much as ticking off sights.

What to See Around Athens

Piraeus

About 35 minutes from the airport (48 km). Greece's great port, about 30 minutes from the center, where ferries fan out to the Cyclades, the Saronic Gulf and Crete. It is where most island journeys begin, but it rewards time of its own: the horseshoe of Mikrolimano harbor, lined with fish tavernas and bobbing yachts, is one of the most pleasant spots in the city for a long seafood lunch, with working districts such as Nikaia just inland. Transfers: Piraeus · Nikaia

The Athens Riviera

Glyfada ~28 min (25 km), Alimos Marina ~37 min. South of the center, the coast road threads past marinas, organized beaches, beach bars and seafood tavernas through smart Glyfada and on toward the coves of Vouliagmeni. Greece's largest marina, at Alimos, is the launch point for day-sail charters around the Saronic Gulf. This is where Athenians spend their summer evenings — a side of the city most first-timers miss entirely. Transfers: Glyfada · Alimos Marina

Kallithea & the SNFCC

About 48 minutes (36 km). Between the center and the coast, the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center — a Renzo Piano-designed complex housing the national opera and library inside a vast landscaped park — is one of modern Athens' finest spaces. It is free to wander, with a canal and a roof terrace that look out toward the sea. Transfer: Athens Airport to Kallithea

Cape Sounion

Down the coast road past Lavrio (~29 min to the port). At the southern tip of Attica, about an hour and a half down the coast past the port town of Lavrio, the white marble Temple of Poseidon stands alone on a cliff above the Aegean. It is the classic Athens sunset trip — Byron carved his name into a column here — and the drive along the shore is half the pleasure. Transfer: Athens Airport to Lavrio

Ancient Olympia

About 3 hours 22 across the Peloponnese (279 km). Further afield, across the Corinth Canal and deep into the Peloponnese, lies the birthplace of the Olympic Games: a sanctuary of Zeus, the original stadium and a fine museum among the pines. It is a long day trip, or better an overnight, but it ranks among the great sites of the ancient world. Transfer: Athens Airport to Olympia

Airport to City: Times and Prices

Private transfers out of Athens Airport start from €43 for a saloon car, fixed at booking, with minivans for seven, a business van for eight and a minibus for sixteen — island-hopping groups with ferry luggage ride in one vehicle. The times below are normal-traffic estimates from the live route pages; central Athens traffic is the variable the fixed price absorbs.

Athens summers are genuinely hot. Visit the Acropolis right at opening or in the last hours before sunset, carry water, and keep the middle of the day for museums or the coast. The airport metro is cheap and reliable, but with luggage or in July heat a door-to-door transfer is far easier.

Where to Stay: Under the Rock or by the Sea

Plaka and Koukaki put the Acropolis at the end of the street — the classic first-visit base, about 31 minutes from the airport. Syntagma and Monastiraki trade a little charm for rooftop-bar skylines and metro convenience. In summer, consider living like an Athenian instead: base at Glyfada on the Riviera, swim before breakfast, and ride in for the marbles in the cooler morning hours. Ferry-bound travelers overnight near Piraeus before an early sailing — or skip the hotel and time the airport pickup straight to the gate.

When to Go

April–June and September–October are ideal — warm but not punishing, with thinner crowds at the ancient sites. July and August are very hot, and this is when the coast and the islands become the real draw. Winter is mild by northern-European standards, and the museums and archaeological sites are wonderfully quiet; just pack a layer for the evenings.

Getting There and Around

Direct flights connect Athens International Airport (ATH), Eleftherios Venizelos, to cities across Europe and beyond. The airport lies on the eastern edge of Attica, linked to both the center and the port of Piraeus by motorway and a direct metro line.

After a long flight, few people relish wrestling suitcases onto the metro or negotiating a taxi fare in a new alphabet. A pre-booked private transfer puts a driver at arrivals who takes you straight to your hotel, the city center, or the ferries at Piraeus if an island is the next stop. Fixed price, no meter, no surprises. The driver meets you at arrivals with a name board, tracks your flight, and waits up to 60 minutes free after landing; cancellation is free up to 24 hours before pickup. For a Sounion sunset or a Delphi day, the hourly service keeps a driver on call at a fixed price.
